Miller Time
January 12, 2008
The 2008 Florida Marlins are on their way to setting a major league record before the season even starts, and no it’s not for biggest payroll disparity. The Marlins currently have four players invited to Spring Training with the last name of Miller. Their first names are Andrew, Colby, Jai, and Justin. There’s still more than a month until players report so there’s plenty of time for the Marlins to add another Miller to the bunch. For a little analysis of each Miller, keep reading.
A Line to Ride the Pine
January 8, 2008
The bench is an often overlooked aspect on a Major League Baseball team. Think about it for a second, the bench is mostly filled with aging veterans who can still contribute but not enough to warrant 500 at bats in a season. Besides these, the bench contains minor league fringe players who are not the top prospects aka future of the team but guys who are too good for AAA but not quite good enough to be a regular in the major leagues. This makes it sound as if the bench is not important. That could not be farther from the truth. It is an extremely important part of every team and it does as much as any other part of the team to determine who hoists the World Series trophy.
The Empty Hot Corner
January 6, 2008
The Marlins have signed some options for the gaping hole on the left corner formerly occupied by Miguel Cabrera. First, they signed Jose Castillo of former Pirates fame and recently they have added Jorge Cantu to the mix as well.
Castillo is a career .256 hitter in 4 seasons with Pittsburgh. Early on his career he looked like a potential longterm middle infielder but his production has dropped off ever since leading to a .244 average in limited use during the 2007 season. Castillo played the majority of his games at 2nd base for the Pirates but he does have some experience at the hot corner which is where the Marlins will place him. One option would be to move Dan Uggla to 3rd and use Castillo at 2nd but reports thus far have stated the fish will not go that route.
