Opening Day started out perfect. The sun was blazing in the sky and the Marlins fans were smiling all across the stadium. Hero, Jeff Conine gave a heartwarming pre game speech as he officially retired from baseball. Everything was perfect, well except for the delayed flyover but let’s make believe that didn’t happen. The starting pitchers were Chris Volstad and Phil Hughes which was a glimpse of the future for both teams. Volstad kept the Yankee bats quiet and battled out of rallies giving him a final line of 4 innings pitched with 0 earned runs. The Marlins held a slim 2-1 lead until the 9th when Kevin Gregg surrendered 3 runs on an inside the park home run. Alejandro De Aza was injured on this play which allowed all 3 runs to score. As things moved to Dolphin Stadium today for Spring Training, the Marlins defeated the New York Yankees 5-3. Andrew Miller faced off against Mike Mussina as both squads used their regular season lineups for the majority of the game. Miller threw for 5 innings surrendering 3 earned runs on 9 hits. Impressive however were the 6 strikeouts Miller had against a very disciplined Yankees lineup.
