In the final road game of the Spring, the Marlins beat the New York Mets 7-5 today. Ricky Nolasco started the game and had a great outing. He had a great outing of 2 earned runs in 5 innings of pitched. This outing was even more impressive since it came against the Mets whom he has struggled against numerous times in the past. Renyel Pinto, Lee Gardner, and Joe Nelson added scoreless innings of their own in the game. Matt Lindstrom surrendered 2 runs in 1 inning of work but both were unearned. Logan Kensing pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up one run. Mike Jacobs and Jorge Cantu each hit home runs in the game. Cantu continued his amazing Spring with another 3 runs batted in.

As Spring Training neared closer to it’s end today, the Marlins lost a game to the Orioles 8-1. Former Opening Day starter hopeful, Scott Olsen took the loss in a tough outing. Olsen lasted 4 innings and gave up 6 earned runs raising concerns about how much he is behind due to an injury earlier this Spring. He is expected to start the 4th game of the season vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates. Logan Kensing, Kevin Gregg, and Chris Leroux added scoreless innings for the fish. Justin Miller had a rough inning out of the pen giving up 2 earned runs and 3 walks. The only run for the fish today came courtesy of a Mike Jacobs RBI pinch hit.

Today’s game was a wild one that ended without a winner. After 10 innings of play, the Marlins and Houston Astros decided to end things with a tie of 10-10. Opening Day Roster hopeful Chris Volstad saw his chances take a huge hit with a rough outing. Volstad started the game and gave up 7 earned runs in only 2 innings of work. After entering the game with an E.R.A of 1.13, he saw it balloon to 4.50. While this doesn’t eliminate Volstad from competition, it greatly increases the chance of him being sent to the minors for more seasoning as he was on the bubble as it is. Renyel Pinto, Lee Gardner, Taylor Tankerlsey, and Joe Nelson all threw scoreless innings of relief. Doug Waechter gave up 2 earned runs in 3 innings of work. Kevin Gregg pitched an inning and gave up 1 run. Mike Jacobs had the best day at the plate for the Marlins going 3-4. Read more

The Netherlands native lasted 4 innings and gave up 1 earned run. His control wasn’t an issue today as he served up no walks. Matt Lindtrom, Justin Miller, Lee Gardner, Taylor Tankersley and Logan Kensing all added scoreless innings of their own. Kensing picked up the save in the game. Of note in this game, was Dallas McPherson getting a start — a rare one this Spring. The third base competition is all but officially over however as Jorge Cantu is set to start there on Opening Day.
Spring Recap - 3/22
March 22, 2008
The Marlins game with the Baltimore Orioles today was rained out. However, there was big news today as the fish announced their Opening Day Starter. It’ll be Mark Hendrickson taking on Johan Santana and the New York Mets on March 31. Hendrickson earned the job with a very strong Spring. In addition, Hendrickson is the veteran of the staff and more able to deal with the distractions that come with the honor.
