Shutout Loss Costs Marlins Ground

olsen56.jpgThursday’s game was a microcosm of the recent troubles for the Marlins which has stopped them from putting together a win streak in a pivotal time of year.   The shutout loss to the Cardinals 3-0 knocked the Marlins back to two and a half games out of first place trailing the New York Mets.   It has now been more than two weeks since the last time the fish had consecutive wins.

Scott Olsen started this game and pitched well enough to win but came with a loss after throwing seven innings of three run ball.    The lefty who is now 6-8 on the year struck out six while walking none.   Logan Kensing pitched two scoreless innings of relief after Olsen exited.   The offense for the Marlins compiled four hits in the game.

The Marlins open a series with the Cubs on Friday.   Carlos Zambrano will make the start for Chicago while Josh Johnson will start for the fish as they try and snap a two game losing streak.

Fish Fail To String Wins Together

nolasco82.jpgAfter Wednesday’s 6-4 loss to the Cardinals, the fish remain without a two game win streak since the end of July.   The inconsistency has kept the Marlins from gaining much ground in the National League East.    The Phillies lost their game as well keeping the Marlins one and a half games out of first place.   However, the Mets won so the fish now trail both Philadelphia and New York by the same margin.

Ricky Nolasco made the start for the Marlins and was not as effective as previous starts this year however he did enough to keep his team in the game and battled through six innings.   Nolasco allowed 10 hits and struck out five walking none.   The righty was given a no decision in the game as the loss was charged to reliever Renyel Pinto.   In total the Marlins’ pitchers allowed 18 hits to the Cardinals in this game.

The four game series comes to a close on Thursday as Todd Wellemeyer pitches for the Cardinals.  The Marlins will counter with Scott Olsen.
