The Marlins got back into the win column on Saturday courtesy of Cody Ross’ bat in the bottom of the 9th. Ross’ walkoff home run gave the Marlins an 8-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds. In a game marred by ugly defense, and blown leads, the fish came out on top in the form of a blown save charged to Reds closer Francisco Cordero. The win kept the Marlins 3.5 games behind the first place Phillies.
Scott Olsen made the start for the fish throwing 6 innings without allowing an earned run. The lefty was cruising and was let down by his defense in the 6th in which 4 unearned runs scored. Olsen struck out 5 and only allowed 4 hits and 1 walk during his time on the mound. With a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the 6th, Olsen was pinch hit for and exited the game with possibly more left in the tank. Renyel Pinto was the first reliever out of the pen and tossed one scoreless inning. Logan Kensing pitched next and allowed 3 earned runs in two thirds of an inning. Sunday’s scheduled starter Burke Badenhop escaped the jam Kensing got into in the 8th and then added another scoreless inning in the 9th to give him 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
The fish hit 3 home runs in this game. The first blast was Luis Gonzalez’s 5th of the season. Jorge Cantu hit one an inning later to give him 11 for the season and 3 in the last 2 games. Finally, Cody Ross hit the biggest home run of all in the 9th when he hit a walkoff 2 run homer to give the Marlins the big come from behind victory. The fish trailed by two entering the 9th and brought home three. Cantu had his 2nd three hit game in a row. Gonzalez and Ross added multi hit games of their own with two hits a piece.
On Sunday, game 3 of the 4 game series will be played as the fish send rookie callup Ryan Tucker to the mound to take on Aaron Harang of the Cincinnati Reds.
