Fish Fight Back, Fall Short
April 30, 2008
Tuesday was the start of a 9 game home stand for the Marlins and it got off on a sour note. Facing the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Marlins dropped the game by the score of 7-6. The fish were down 5-0 and 6-1 early and fought back to tie the game at six courtesy of clutch defense, relief pitching, and of course offense but in the end the pitching wasn’t enough as the Dodgers scored the winning run in the 9th.
Andrew Miller made the start for the Marlins and continued his tough season by giving up 6 earned runs in 3 innings of work. Miller saw his E.R.A. rise to 9.12 and put the fish in a hole right at the start. Doug Waechter came in out of the bull pen and threw 4 scoreless innings in which he only allowed 2 hits. It was Waechter’s clutch relief work that allowed the Marlins to tie the game back up. Renyel Pinto added an inning of scoreless relief. Closer Kevin Gregg pitched the 9th with the score tied at 6 and gave up the winning R.B.I to Jeff Kent.
Dan Uggla and Alfredo Amezaga flashed gold glove caliber defense in the 6th after the fish fought back to tie the game in the 5th inning. Uggla also added his 4th home run of the season in the comeback bid. Jorge Cantu broke out of a slump with a 3-4 day. Jeremy Hermida and Luis Gonzalez each had two hits in the game. Gonzalez was filling in for Josh Willingham who missed the game with a stiff back.
On Wednesday, Scott Olsen will take the mound for the Marlins as he faces off against Chad Billingsley for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
