Fish Split Friday Games
February 29, 2008
The Marlins had a split squad today sending half the team to take on the Washington Nationals while the other half faced off against the Baltimore Orioles. Coincidentally, the Nats and O’s are the only teams the Marlins have played thus far this Spring.
The Marlins defeated the Nationals by a score of 4-1. Starting pitcher Ricky Nolasco got the win while the starter for the Nats, Tyler Clippard took the loss. Alejandro De Aza hit a home run in this game, his 2nd day in a row with a homer. De Aza is now batting .600 with 2 round trippers and and 6 runs batted in this Spring. The Marlins made two errors in this game leading to one unearned run off of reliever Lee Gardner.
In the other game vs the Baltimore Orioles, the Marlins took their first loss of the Spring in a wild 7-5 defeat. It was a back and forth game started by Mark Hendrickson for the fish. Tim Corcoran wound up taking the loss for the team surrendering 2 runs in one inning of work. The fish were sloppy in the field, committing 3 errors in this game –two of them by non roster invitee Chris Barnwell and the other by Dan Uggla.
Thus far the Marlins are 2-1-1 in Grapefruit League action. On Saturday, the Marlins will be taking on the St. Louis Cardinals.
