Marlins Sweep Doubleheader

The Marlins completed a sweep of a Sunday doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants with a 5-4 win. The fish game one by the score of 8-6. With the two wins in one day, the fish improved their lead in the National League East to 2 games and notched their record up to 29-20. Dan Uggla brought home the winning run in the bottom of the 9th with a sharp line drive up the middle.
Eulogio De La Cruz was called up from AAA Albuquerque before this game to make the start. To make room, Robert Andino was once again optioned to the Isotopes. De La Cruz was making his Marlins debut in the game after being acquired from the Detroit Tigers in the Miguel Cabrera deal. The spot starter lasted three innings and allowed 2 earned runs while walking 4. Due to pitching on 3 days rest, De La Cruz was on a pitch count. Justin Miller pitched two innings of relief and allowed 2 earned runs. Renyel Pinto worked two scoreless innings. Taylor Tankersley added an inning of scoreless relief of his own in the 8th. Kevin Gregg pitched the 9th inning with the game tied but picked up the win to move to 4-2 for the season when the Marlins walked off with the win. Gregg got a save in the first game to give him a save and a win on the same day.
Uggla’s big hit came with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning off of Giants’ closer Brian Wilson. It was Uggla’s only hit of the 2nd game after homering in the first game. Jorge Cantu had 2 hits and 3 runs batted in as he hit his 7th home run of the season and 2nd of the day in this game. Hanley Ramirez had two hits as he slowly breaks out of his recent slump.
On Monday, the Marlins will open a series with the New York Mets. Ricky Nolasco is scheduled to throw for the fish, as the Mets counter with Mike Pelfrey.
