Miller Time

January 12, 2008 by Larry Walansky

The 2008 Florida Marlins are on their way to setting a major league record before the season even starts, and no it’s not for biggest payroll disparity. The Marlins currently have four players invited to Spring Training with the last name of Miller. Their first names are Andrew, Colby, Jai, and Justin. There’s still more than a month until players report so there’s plenty of time for the Marlins to add another Miller to the bunch. For a little analysis of each Miller, keep reading.

Andrew - One of the key pieces of the Miguel Cabrera/Dontrelle Willis deal in December. He looks to make the rotation as a front line starter possibly entering the year as the #2 starter on the team. It would be a surprise at this point if he does not make the team out of Spring Training.

Colby - Recently signed to a minor league deal, he is a former 3rd round pick at the age of 25. He last played in the Independent Professional Baseball League for Shreveport. Colby is a RHP and is a longshot to make the team out of Spring Training. He could add depth in Albuquerque however and see action with the fish later in the season.

Jai - One of the up and coming prospects in the Marlins organization, he was added to the 40 man roster this off-season. Jai is about to turn 23 and plays the outfield. He is another long shot to make the initial 25 man roster but he definitely has a chance to see time later in the year in the bigs.

Justin - After a lackluster career, Miller turned in a better than average season in 2007. He was a key piece of the bullpen and had a 3.65 ERA for the season. He is a virtual lock to make the team to start the year fresh off a new contract.

There’s a chance 4 or maybe more Millers wear the teal and black at some point this year. The Marlins have the perfect framework for a sponsorship deal with Miller Brewing Company because in 2008 it’s going to be Miller Time often for the Marlins.
