Olsen Dominant In Win
May 6, 2008
Scott Olsen put on a show Tuesday night as the Marlins opened the series against the Milwaukee Brewers with a 3-0 shutout win. After a sub par outing last time out, Olsen showed poise on the mound all night long on his way to nearly securing the first complete game for the Marlins since September 2006. It was not to be however as Olsen loaded the bases in the 9th and was removed after throwing 121 pitches. Kevin Gregg entered and finished off the Brewers on one pitch for his 6th save of the season.
Last time out, Olsen faced a red hot Dodgers team and allowed 4 earned runs in 5 innings pitched during a 13-1 rout by Los Angeles. That game raised his E.R.A to 2.70. Today’s phenomenal effort lowered that earned run average to 2.22. Olsen only allowed two hits in this game. The first hit came in the 4th inning off Ryan Braun’s bat following a delay in the game when Brewers’ manage Ned Yost was ejected. The other hit came in the 9th inning off the bat of Prince Fielder. Olsen would go on to walk pinch hitter Joe Dillon next to load the bases. That would be all for the Marlins’ ace as he fell one out short of throwing the first complete game for the fish since Anibal Sanchez in 2006.
The Marlins’ runs came courtesy of a Mike Jacobs home run in the 3rd inning a Luis Gonzalez RBI single in the 2nd. Jake’s homer was his team leading 9th of the season and was hit to dead center. Jacobs now has 22 runs batted in on the season. Luis Gonzalez turned in a 4 hit night as he continued to fill in for Josh Willingham in left field. Gonzalez raised his average to .273 in his best game as a Marlin thus far.
On Wednesday, the series continues as the Marlins send Burke Badenhop to the mound to take on Dave Bush for the Brewers.
