Spring Recap - 3/24

March 24, 2008 by Larry Walansky

Today’s game was a wild one that ended without a winner. After 10 innings of play, the Marlins and Houston Astros decided to end things with a tie of 10-10. Opening Day Roster hopeful Chris Volstad saw his chances take a huge hit with a rough outing. Volstad started the game and gave up 7 earned runs in only 2 innings of work. After entering the game with an E.R.A of 1.13, he saw it balloon to 4.50. While this doesn’t eliminate Volstad from competition, it greatly increases the chance of him being sent to the minors for more seasoning as he was on the bubble as it is. Renyel Pinto, Lee Gardner, Taylor Tankerlsey, and Joe Nelson all threw scoreless innings of relief. Doug Waechter gave up 2 earned runs in 3 innings of work. Kevin Gregg pitched an inning and gave up 1 run. Mike Jacobs had the best day at the plate for the Marlins going 3-4.

In transaction news, it was a busy day for the Marlins. Early on Robert Andino was optioned to AAA while Burke Badenhop was reassigned to minor league camp. Badenhop was in the mix for a rotation job and was even briefly mentioned as a potential Opening Day starter. After the game today, Cameron Maybin was optioned to AA Carolina. Maybin was trying to win the regular center fielder job but struggled this Spring prompting the Marlins to not rush the youngster. Maybin is seen as a future superstar and All Star but for now he’ll need All Star Game Tickets to be at the game in Yankee Stadium this year.

Speaking of the New York Yankees, it is being rumored that Mike Mussina will take the ball for one of the games against the Marlins this weekend.

On Tuesday, the Marlins will take on the Baltimore Orioles.
