Volstad Called Up
July 6, 2008 by Larry Walansky
The Marlins called up their top pitching prospect, Chris Volstad on Sunday. The Florida native who was drafted in the 2005 First Year Player Draft had been playing in AA with the Carolina Mudcats. Volstad will be available out of the bullpen during Sunday’s game and could join the rotation during this roadtrip.
For this season, Volstad was 4-4 with a 3.36 ERA in Carolina. The rookie has allowed 30 walks while striking out 56 in 91 innings of work. Volstad is taking the roster spot vacated by Taylor Tankersley who was demoted to AAA Albuqerque following Saturday’s game in Colorado. Tankersley had recently been promoted but struggled in his only outing back in the majors.
The Marlins who are never shy about calling up players from AA and putting them right into the mix in the majors are expected to give Volstad a chance at keeping a rotation spot for the remainder of the season once he steps into one of the 5 spots. Whether he takes over for Mark Hendrickson or Ryan Tucker in the rotation remains to be seen. It is possible both of those pitchers will vacate the rotation as Josh Johnson is expected to be activated within the next few days as well.
