Wiley returns to the Marlins as pitching coach

November 2, 2007

The Florida Marlins had some positive offseason news on Friday afternoon by naming Mark Wiley their new pitching coach.Marlins fan’s aren’t used to receiving good news during the offseason so this was a breath of fresh air. This will mark Wiley’s second stint with the Marlins as his contract was not renewed entering the 2006 season, when the Marlins named Joe Girardi manager.

Wiley served as a special assignment scout for the NL Champion Colorado Rockies for the past two seasons and will replace Rick Kranitz, who left the last week of the season and was recently named pitching coach of the Baltimore Orioles.

By earning the job, Wiley beat out internal canidates such as Reid Cornelius, Wayne Rosenthal and Steve Foster (Who served as Kranitz replacement the last week of the season).

With the hiring, manager Fredi Gonzalez’ staff is now complete.

One of Wiley’s biggest highlights was he was the coach, when Dontrelle Willis had 22 wins and finished second in Cy Young balloting.

“I was treated great here when I was here before,” Wiley told the Florida Marlins official website on Friday afternoon. “A lot of things happen when you are changing managers and that kind of thing. Jack was kind of retired, and I really was in a situation where I didn’t want to be gone, but I’m very pleased to be back and have an opportunity again.”
